Attorneys representing the family of James Anderson, 48, who was murdered after a group of teens in Mississippi beat up, robbed and then killed him by running him over with a pickup truck, are filing a civil lawsuit.

The suit filed Tuesday in a Mississippi district court alleges that seven teenagers including Deryl Dedmon, who is charged with capital murder, and John Rice, who was charged with assault, "set out on a mission" to find and harass African-Americans.

Anderson’s sister, mother and two brothers, who all filed the suit through the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center and Mississippi attorney Winston J. Thompson III, are seeking a jury trial and damages.

"James Anderson lost his life for no other reason than the color of his skin," Morris Dees, chief trial counsel for the center said in a statement. “Those responsible must be held accountable for their callous and deadly actions. We are filing this lawsuit today to ensure his family gets a measure of justice."

A monetary amount for damages has not yet been specified.
