Box Office: Guardians Reclaims the Crown, Sin City a Record Flop
There were some big upsets at the box office this weekend. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy leapt back to the top of the charts with a $17.6 million gross in its fourth week, narrowly beating out last week’s winner Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The action-comedy, starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana, has grossed a whopping $251.9 million domestically.
TMNT, meanwhile, brought in an additional $16.8 million for a domestic total of $145.6 million and a second place finish.
Taking the third spot was tearjerker If I Stay, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, which opened with $16.4 million.
Rounding out the top five were the buddy comedy Let’s Be Cops, which is the season’s legit sleeper hit, and the football drama When the Game Stands Tall, which earned $11 million and $9 million, respectively.
Shockingly, the star-studded action sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For fell below expectations, making only $6.5 million and coming in eighth place in its opening weekend. The film, starring Jessica Alba and directed by Robert Rodriguez, could be the biggest flop in the history of the Weinstein Company, which produced and financed the project.
