27-year-old Matthew Apperson, who gained national attention after shooting at George Zimmerman in 2015, was found guilty of attempted murder in the second degree.

During the trial, Apperson argued that he shot at Zimmerman in self-defense. However, the district attorney claimed that Apperson’s behavior before the shooting did not fall within the standards of self-defense.

According to Zimmerman, Apperson followed him while flashing his lights and honking his horn. Zimmerman alleged that Apperson pulled up beside him in a car and shot at him. The bullet from Apperson’s .357 Magnum shattered Zimmerman’s window and lodged into the car seat.

Apperson maintains that Zimmerman threatened him and was the first person to flash a gun.

The two have a history that goes back to 2014, when they got into an argument over the shooting of an unarmed Black teen. In 2012, Zimmerman was acquitted for shooting and killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. In their first argument, Apperson yelled at Zimmerman for being wrong for killing Martin, which is when he alleges Zimmerman began threatening him.

Then, in May of 2015, Apperson and Zimmerman were involved in another dispute where Apperson shot at Zimmerman through the car window. After the trial ended, the jury deliberated for four hours and came back with a guilty verdict.

Apperson faces a minimum of 20 years because his assault involved a firearm. He will be sentenced in October.

Interesting how the law seems to work in Zimmerman’s favor once again.
