What Happened When We Gave Up Tampons And Wore Only 'Period Panties' Instead

Not quite free bleeding, but pretty close.

As we well know, the female body is an increasingly political topic. Over at BET.com, we aren't afraid to experiment with the latest technology geared towards those with a uterus. This month, we are ditching tampons in favor of panties that catch menstrual blood with special fabric. Not only are tampons pretty annoying, but they are wasteful. According to Diva Cup, another tampon alternative, the average woman will use 240 tampons a year. That's a whole lot of waste for half of the population. Additionally, tampons are made up of mostly cotton, but in many cases a lot of other stuff that is super unregulated and we're not totally sure it's safe to just blindly use. But then again, we are professional women and though free-bleeding had its moment, it's probably not office appropriate. Enter Thinx, the period panties that mean that we can finally take a break from tampons and pads. Naturally, every product out there promises to be life changing, but the only way to know for sure is to get out there and try them for ourselves, so in the name of hard-hitting journalism, that is exactly what we did.

I was so ready to give up tampons this year! One of New Year's resolutions was to reduce my carbon footprint and become greener. I know that in the grand scheme of things, tampons seems like small potatoes, but in actuality this is the kind of thing that really adds up. I had heard about Thinx before, but I heard a lot of horror stories about leaks throughout the day or during various activities, and leaks was something I left behind in middle school. It's one of those things you let happen and actively try not to repeat. When I got my Thinx, I was apprehensive but excited because truly I did want to be free of the weight of worrying about tampons all the time.

I have a 25-inch waist and received a size small. However, my hips measure closer to 38 inches and so I felt that in the butt area the small was a bit snug. If you are bottom heavy, definitely size up!

In terms of usage though, it went really smoothly! I had NO leaks or accidents. As a disclaimer though, I have had an IUD for three years so my periods are significantly lighter than they used to be. That said, I still bleed, so I was really worried about my white sheets at night but literally nothing happened!

I swear that I am fully converted. I am happy to ditch tampons from now on in favor of Thinx. I will say that the most complicated part is making sure they are washed separately from my other laundry. I accidentally put a pair in the dryer and freaked out a little bit. They are not supposed to be dryed like that because it wears them down faster and since I live in NYC without my own washer and dryer, this has become complicated. At the moment though, I have gone through three period cycles with my Thinx, and I am super happy with the results. I recommend to anyone curious!

Despite interviewing former THINX founder Miki Agrawal in 2016, I was super apprehensive about trying this so-called "period panty." I will say it is odd that when it comes to feminine hygiene there hasn’t been a game-changing break-through since tampons (which I hate BTW). Nonetheless, I was down to try something new that was better for me and the environment. I tried the best-selling hiphuggers style that promises to hold two tampons worth of blood. Eeek!

On the first day of my cycle, I wasn’t bold enough to wear them out into the mean streets of Brooklyn, so I rocked them at home instead. Initially, you feel like you are wearing swimsuit bottoms, not necessarily underwear. It took a minute to get used to.

Sizing does run a bit small, so I would suggest sizing up to make sure you are comfortable. The only challenge I discovered was figuring out how much I bled in a certain period. Like two tampons worth? That can be super quick or slow depending on your flow. However, what was outstanding was that there was NO odor at all. Like, none. Even after I washed them by hand and hung them per their directions, no weird musty smell.

I’m not 100 percent confident wearing them all day long (because if you have a heavy flow, you can’t change mid-day) but I do think they are a great solve for bedtime, lighter days, or special occasions (i.e. formal events). I’ll definitely keep these in rotation in the future. Every woman should try at least one pair!

When I first heard about Thinx underwear, I was pretty skeptical. If they were really “period-proof,” as all the labels said, I thought they had to feel like diapers or adult depends. But upon using them, I can now confidently say that I was wrong. Thinx are comfortable and actually work — but there is a slight catch.

My flow is pretty normal. It starts rather heavy and gradually fades over the course of five to six days. While the label says you can wear the underwear without the use of a tampon or other sanitary products, I chose to wear a tampon in addition to them for the first two days, as those are my heavier flow days. Aside from my improvisation however, Thinx seemed to hold up well throughout the day. What residue that did get on the material didn’t seep through to my other clothing and it didn’t have that soggy feeling of a pad. I did feel somewhat awkward that I couldn’t change my underwear during the day though. With pads, you do have that luxury, whereas with the Thinx, I was forced to sit in my own fluids for the entire day. That being said, the extra tampon prevented a lot of the messiness that I’m sure some might’ve experienced.

After Day 3 of my cycle, things went pretty smoothly. I did not wear a tampon those days, and aside from not being able to change my underwear, I didn’t have much of a problem. However, I noticed that I was going to the bathroom a lot out of insecurity (but that might change over time).

Overall, I would definitely recommend Thinx to a friend, especially if your flow is mild. I wouldn’t suggest women with heavy flows go fully "commando," but it definitely adds a layer of protection. The cleanup is also essentially hassle-free. I hand washed my pair every night, and they were ready to wear by the next day (I would maybe recommend buying several pair, so the routine goes smoothly though). All in all, I’m giving Thinx a thumbs up.
