Trevor Noah Sues NYC Hospital, Orthopedic Surgeon Over Botched Surgery
Comedian and The Daily Show Host Trevor Noah has filed a lawsuit against a New York City hospital and an orthopedic doctor following an alleged botched surgery from 2020.
According to documents obtained by PEOPLE, the procedure done on Noah has allegedly caused him a great deal of pain, with some of the effects leading to permanent damage. The lawsuit names Dr. Riley J. Williams III and the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.
The legal complaint states that Noah, 37, suffered from “severe emotional distress and great physical pain” following the procedure, leaving him with “permanent, severe and grievous” injuries.
Noah was under the care of the hospital between August 25, 2020 and December 17, 2020. He underwent surgery with Dr. Williams on November 23, 2020.
Documents further note that the defendants “were negligent and careless in failing to treat and care for [Noah] in a careful and skillful manner.”
Noah also alleges their failure “to prescribe proper medications” and “discontinue certain prescription medications.” The comedian continued they “failed to use proper tests and examinations in order to diagnose the conditions” that he suffered from.
The court document alleges Noah’s “serious personal injuries” left him “rendered sick, sore, lame, and disabled.”
Noah reportedly "sustained severe and painful personal injuries; sustained severe nervous shock, mental anguish, severe emotional distress and great physical pain; was confined to bed and home for a long period of time; was compelled to undergo hospital and medical aid, treatment and attention; has suffered loss of enjoyment of life; was prevented from engaging in his usual occupation for a long period of time; and since some of his injuries are of a permanent nature, he will continue to suffer similar damages in the future."
The hospital has since denied these claims, with a representative telling PEOPLE the hospital “received a complaint filed on behalf of Mr. Trevor Noah. We have shared with Mr. Noah’s attorney a detailed rebuttal to the claims, which are meritless.”
The hospital, “due to HIPPA,” does not share the specifics of the treatments and care their more than 150,000 patients undergo per year.
