Denzel and Pauletta Washington Did Something Major for the African-American Community
Denzel Washington and his wife Pauletta recently used their power couple status for good. The couple of more than 30 years held an event at their L.A. home to raise money for the Smithsonian's National Museum of African-American History and Culture.
According to Variety, they raised upwards from $17 million for the project, $10 million of which came from Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes.
"There is such a historical significance to this project," the Oscar-winning actor said. "It means so much for our community, our country and to future generations."
Pauletta, an accomplished pianist and Broadway performer, started the evening with the Lord's Prayer.
"In this climate where so much money is being raised for the Presidency and The White House, it is incredible to have the support we received," she said. "It's good knowing that even with so much going on, people are committed to making sure that this museum is successful."
The Smithsonian's National Museum of African-American History and Culture has been a passion project of President Obama's for a while. He even said he hoped to have it finished by the time he leaves office.
It is set to officially open its doors on September 24.
