Kristen Stewart got herself dragged by Twitter yesterday for some offensive comments she made about #OscarsSoWhite. Speaking to Variety at the Sundance Film Festival, the Twilight actress said boycotters should, “Instead of sitting around and complaining about that, do something.” 
A couple of hours after posting the interview, Variety issued a full-throated apology to Stewart. Why? Because she wasn't talking about diversity, at least not in the way Black Twitter and everyone else thought she was. The trade magazine supposedly took her comments out of context and published them under the headline, Kristen Stewart on Diversity in Hollywood: 'Do Something' Instead of Complaining. Turns out, the actress was talking about women in Hollywood, not people of color.
So, to be clear: Kristen was slamming Jennifer Lawrence and other women complaining about lack of roles and pay inequity, not Jada Pinkett Smith, Spike Lee and the rest of the #OscarsSoWhite boycotters. OK...
"Comments made in a videotaped interview Monday with actress Kristen Stewart about gender equality in Hollywood at the Sundance Film Festival were erroneously labeled on Variety.com in a way that suggested she was addressing issues pertaining to diversity," the site said in a statement.
"Variety regrets the error and apologizes for any confusion.... The error was the result of an edit to the Web page in which the video was presented without seeing the specific question Stewart was answering, which pertained to a lack of opportunities for female actors and directors," the statement continued.
Well, some might think slamming women is not much better than bashing people of color, but this was a huge gaffe nonetheless.
