Palin to Obama: Honor Martin Luther King by Not Playing the Race Card

Gov. Sarah Palin, in Facebook post, accuses Obama of playing the race card but doesn't say how.

Former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is stirring the race pot again. On the day that the nation honored slain civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., Palin offered President Obama this bit of advice.

"Mr. President, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and all who commit to ending any racial divide, no more playing the race card," Palin wrote on her Facebook page Monday.

The post also included a quote from King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech about the day when people would judge others by "the content of their character" rather than "the color of their skin."

What possessed her, some wonder, to not follow her own advice? Since she didn't offer any details of how Obama is playing the race card, it may have been a reaction to a much-talked-about profile of the president in the latest issue of The New Yorker magazine in which he reflected on some voters' reaction to his election.

"There's no doubt that there's some folks who just really dislike me because they don't like the idea of a Black president," Obama said. "Now, the flip side of it is there are some Black folks and maybe some white folks who really like me and give me the benefit of the doubt precisely because I'm a Black president."

Palin's post has so far drawn more than 4,000 responses, not all of them supportive or positive.

"I doubt Palin is a racist, she's just unintelligent...doesn't get it," wrote one person. "The rich irony of her post is somewhat overwhelming."

"Sarah uses her mentally challenged card every time she opens her mouth," said another.
