Black Lives Matter Co-founder Will Be a Guest at State of the Union
Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza will be a guest of Rep. Barbara Lee at President Obama's final State of the Union address Tuesday.
Garza is a constituent's of Lee, who represents California's 13th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Lee tweeted her excitement for the news on Jan 8.
Garza is one of three founding members of Black Lives Matter, which was formed after the death of Trayvon Martin in 2012 and the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the fatal shooting. After several more shootings of unarmed African-Americans followed, the organization gained steam and empowered a new generation of activists.
A list of President Obama's VIPs for the upcoming speech were recently released. They include Edith Childs, a woman whose chant at his rally, "fired up and ready to go," became Obama's unofficial campaign slogan, and Mark Davis, the first African-American to own a solar manufacturing company, which has created jobs in Washington, D.C.
