Jerrod Carmichael Discusses Why He Feels Empowered to Tell the Truth Onstage

While speaking to BET Talks, the comedian opened up on how performing for an audience helps him authentically lean into the truth.

Jerrod Carmichael is revealing why it's easy for him to be real in front of cameras.

"Conversations expressing how you feel is hard. It's so hard to say the truth sometimes," he said during the latest installment of BET Talks.

"The stage and cameras have been outlets for me. It's probably why I chose this career because I am sometimes more comfortable on camera or onstage expressing things to an audience," he continued.

For him, being onstage benefits his mental health.

"It does operate like therapy," he added. "I'm more comfortable expressing things that I am afraid to say in my day-to-day life."

"I'm afraid to look someone in their eyes and say the truth all the time." Conversely, when Carmichael's on stage, "It's an excuse. It's a reason to express the truth. I like to be honest on stage. I'm honest on camera because it will capture the truth anyway.

While admitting being in front of lights and cameras has been an outlet, he also said, “It's been a crutch."
