A massive explosion in Silver Spring, Maryland, has injured at least 30 people. Although most of the residents of the apartment building have been accounted for, Montgomery County firefighters continue to search for seven individuals. 

First responders were notified just before midnight on Thursday morning about a fire that affected two neighboring apartment buildings. About 90 people have been displaced from their homes and have been moved to a local community center.

The injuries of the residents range in severity. Some of the injuries occurred when residents were forced to jump out of their windows. A fire K-9 team has been searching through the rubble of the blast. Around 6:30 a.m. this morning, the dogs had a “hit,” which could mean there is a body trapped beneath the debris.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein confirmed that the explosion has resulted in the collapse of one building that has yet to be identified. Goldstein also believes that four other buildings are at risk of collapse.

The cause of the explosion is still yet to be determined. Fire investigators are performing an investigation to determine the sequence of events that occurred before and after the fire.
