Kamaiyah On Releasing ‘Got It Made’ Independently And Her Secret Celebrity Crush

The Oakland native answered fan questions on celebrity crushes, dream collaborations and her new album 'Got it Made.'

Now that she’s back on her independent grind, Kamaiyah couldn’t be any more in her element. Following the breakout success of her 2016 mixtape, A Good Night in the Ghetto, the Oakland native caught the attention of record labels, eventually signing to Interscope Records and YG’s 4 Hunnid Records. In 2017, she released her second project, Before I Wake, in 2017, but soon found herself in the age-old dilemma of her debut album repeatedly getting pushed back until she seized back the reins of her own career.

  • Departing from Interscope and 4 Hunnid in 2019, the 28-year-old launched her own imprint under Empire, GRND.WRK last August, and the fruits of her labor are already paying off.

In February, Kamaiyah released her first full-length album, Got It Made, equipped with 10 songs. The project landed on Complex’s biannual “The Best Albums of 2020 (So Far),” with Kamaiyah clocking in at the 44th spot. The acknowledgement did not escape her notice.

  • “Putting together my album, Got It Made, was a very liberating experience for me because it was my first project after I left my label,” Kamaiyah told BET. “It just felt like I [had] the freedom and liberty to do whatever I wanted to do. I didn’t put a lot of pressure on myself. Creatively, I just had fun and went in.”

In the month’s since the album’s release, the “Still I Am” rapper has been on her creative flex, dropping off a litany of singles. If one thing’s certain, Kamaiyah is just warming up. Check out the rest of her 106&Park Mic Check episode to hear what else she had to say about Got It Made, which actor she’s currently crushing on, and her dream collaborations.
