Tennis star Serena Williams has apologized for her controversial comments that have put her in hot water regarding the 16-year-old Steubenville rape victim. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Williams said the victim "shouldn't have put herself in that position" the night she was raped after a party.

Williams' quotes drew outrage on Tuesday, resulting in Williams issuing an apology Wednesday about "what I supposedly said." 

In a statement she expressed, "I am currently reaching out to the girl's family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article. What was written — what I supposedly said — is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame."

Williams also said she has spent her career fighting for women's rights.
"I have fought all of my career for women’s equality, women’s equal rights, respect in their fields — anything I could do to support women, I have done. My prayers and support always go out to the rape victim. In this case, most especially, to an innocent 16-year-old child."
Ma'Lik Richmond, 16, and Trent Mays, 17, were convicted for raping the girl in March.
