Darrien Hunt, a Black man fatally shot by Utah police while armed with a samurai-style sword, had several gunshot wounds in the back of his body at the time of the incident, a recently released autopsy shows.

According to AP, the results of this official state autopsy confirmed the results of an independent autopsy released by the 22-year-old’s family. Of the six gunshot wounds found on Hunt’s body, at least four struck him from behind. 

The autopsy also showed that there were no drugs in Hunt's system.

Robert Sykes, the attorney for the victim’s family, rejected a narrative in the autopsy that claimed Hunt had charged at one of the officers and swung his sword. A picture taken by a witness proves that Hunt was initially smiling while he spoke with Cpl. Matthew Schauerhamer and Officer Nicholas Judson, Sykes added.

"I think that means they were pursuing him, he was running away. He was probably scared to death,” the attorney said about the autopsy report.

But, police said they were responding to a 911 call about Hunt on Oct. 10 when the man lunged at them with his sword, prompting them to fire.

The family also argued that the sword Hunt carried was decorative and part of the Japanese anime costume he was wearing at the time.

"I don't think anyone would have thought twice if it wasn't someone with an afro," said his mother, Susan Hunt.

According to Tim Taylor, chief deputy at the Utah County Attorney’s Office, an investigation into whether the shooting was legally justified could be complete within a week.
