Look: Thousands Joined Tyson Gay at Candlelight Vigil for His Late Daughter

Such a sad scene after 15-year-old Trinity was killed due to senseless gun violence.

Just so sad.

It's an apt way to describe Olympic sprinter Tyson Gay being joined by thousands of mourners Monday night in Kentucky for a candlelight vigil in remembrance of his late daughter, Trinity Gay. The 15-year-old was caught in senseless crossfire outside of a restaurant early Sunday morning and died about an hour later. She was only 15.

Speaking in front of 2,000 students and community members Monday night, Gay said he's "so numb," before pleading to stop the gun violence that's plaguing America.

“As parents we do our best to raise our child the best we can. And sometimes things just happen; it’s out of our control. We only can look up and ask God why,” Gay said, as reported by Kentucky.com. “Sometimes, we don’t get that answer. I just want people to be safe and understand that we all have a life, and we all have dreams and when your fellow peer has a dream, it’s our job as brothers and sisters to come together and protect each other.”

The vigil opened with several balloons ascending into the sky, as mourners cried for Trinity.

Those mourners included Alexa Garner, 17, and Morgan Gaines, 16, who were with Trinity early Sunday morning when she was struck in the neck via crossfire between two vehicles.

“We were all just listening to music, talking, when we heard gunshots,” Gaines told Kentucky.com. “My first instinct was to roll up the windows, lock the doors, duck down. It didn’t sound like bullets were passing my car. Somehow, the doors got unlocked and Trinity hops in behind me and she’s screaming, ‘I’ve been shot, I’ve been shot. Take me to the hospital.’”

Added Garner: “I couldn’t find the (bullet) hole. I was trying to find where the bleeding was coming from. She started seizing and passed out. She woke back up and she was like, ‘I’m going to stay up. Just get me to the hospital.’ You wouldn’t even think she got shot. There was no tears.”

Trinity's friends did just that, but the 15-year-old would die at St. Joseph's Hospital due to the gun wound she suffered.

Watch Trinity's friends provide chilling details of the shooting and Tyson, himself, emotionally react during the vigil.

Earlier on Monday, three men were arrested in connection to the shooting death of Trinity, including father and son Chazarae Taylor, 38, and D'markeo Taylor, 19, and Dvonta Middlebrooks, 21.

Middlebrooks was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and wanton endangerment, while the Taylors were charged with wanton endangerment, as reported by People.com.

In between their arrests and the candlelight vigil, the Gay family released the following statement, as reported by Kentucky.com:

“We are thankful and grateful for all of love, prayers, condolences, and food that has been sent. We are a close family. We have a strong relationship with God. We are deeply saddened for how this has affected not only our family but the lives of others that has lost a child a friend, or relative by these senseless act of violence. We also believe we in love and forgiveness. We are also praying for the families of the shooters because this too is a loss.”
