Woman Stabbed at Art Basel, Mistaken for Performance
But it was real.
A woman was stabbed during an Art Basel Miami event on Friday night, and it turns out it wasn't performance art, as onlookers initially figured. The incident took place at the Miami Convention Center, in front of an installation called "The Swamp of Sagittarius." The stabber has been identified as Siyuan Zhao, a 24-year-old woman, and it seems she attacked a woman of a similar age.
Zhao's motive is not yet clear, though the stabbing was reportedly preceded by a fight and Zhao later told police she "had to watch [the victim] bleed." She has been charged with attempted murder.
"A guy walked up to me and said, 'I thought I saw a performance, and I thought it was fake blood, but it was real blood,'" one bystander told The Miami Herald. Thankfully, someone figured out the incident was real soon enough and called the police, who arrested Zhao and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital. Her injuries are non-life threatening.
