Almost 100 days since her disappearance, the car and body of Terrilynn Monnette was found in a bayou by a Slidell, Louisiana, police officer on Friday June 7.

Monnette, 26, was a school teacher originally from Long Beach, California, who moved to New Orleans in 2011. She was last seen by her friends in March, leaving a popular bar in the early morning. After a night of drinking she planned to sleep in her car before driving to her apartment, according to her friends.

Her family had been traveling to New Orleans since she went missing to draw attention to her case. After word that her black Honda accord was found, the family gathered to watch and sobbed as the vehicle was being pulled out to dry land. Monnette’s mother feels that police should have recovered the body sooner.
 
"I don't understand why it took them so long to find her car," Toni Enclade told The Times-Picayune. "This is supposedly one of the first places they would have checked. I'm just overwhelmed. It doesn't make sense."

New developments are expected after a scheduled autopsy Monday. New Orleans Homicide detectives and fatality unit are investigating how her car ended up at the bottom of the bayou.
