More than a decade before Royce Da 5'9, Joe Buddens, Crooked I and Joell Ortiz teamed up to form the collective known as Slaughterhouse, Canibus, Kurupt, Ras Kass and Killah Priest came together as the Horsemen (a.k.a. the HRSMN).
The group only put out one limited release album: 2003's The Horsemen Project, leaving many hip hop fans wanting more to no avail. In an exclusive interview with BET.com, Canibus says another album still might happen down the line.
"I think that the Horsemen album will come out one day," said Canibus, adding, "As to when and how, it's difficult to, it's hard to say. The HRSMN have never been 'puppetized,' and I think that's probably one of the chief reasons the album hasn't been put together yet. It's like, no one of any real foundation, label-wise, has said, 'OK we're gonna get behind this group.' Maybe the result would be going in all directions, which they wouldn't be able to anticipate, so they'd rather not get behind something like that."
Canibus appreciates the way Slaughterhouse, in particular, has come together and commanded mainstream respect, but he's not certain radio, or even the underground, is ready for the HRSMN.
"Slaughterhouse is a supergroup, without a doubt," proclaimed Canibus. "Those are super MCs. The HRSMN is also a supergroup but they're different in a sense that the subject matter wouldn't completely follow the moniker of the name, but rather the experiences of the artists. The radio is not acclimatized to that. Not even independent music is acclimatized to that. It would be like alternative music."
As for his solo career, Canibus's first album in three years, titled Fait Accompli (which means "An accomplished fact"), drops Tuesday, June 10, but contrary to most artists, the former Wyclef Jean protegé says he's done explaining his music.
"I don't know how to articulate what's different about [this album] or why it's important. That's why I made it," Canibus said of the 23-track album, which is being produced in its entirety by JP Beats. "You either gotta listen to it yourself or read other people's opinions about it. I'm really not trying to advertise it or misrepresent it. It should look and sound and feel how the listener does. It's 15 albums down the line, and I stopped explaining my albums. I just make it cause I wanna make it that way."
