Summit Dinner Evokes the Spirits of Great Black Women

An expression like “sisterhood is powerful” can sound awfully corny sometimes, except, of course, when it’s true.

An expression like “sisterhood is powerful” can sound awfully corny sometimes, except, of course, when it’s true. During the dinner at the Leading Women Defined summit, candlelight flickered at every table, but not as brightly as the faces of the women in attendance who’d spent much of the day bonding and networking, aspiring and inspiring. Many stood up to discuss the women who most inspire them, legends who often were firsts in their fields.

There’s Madame C.J. Walker, “who taught us about our hair, but more important, our finances,” one woman explained; Billie Jean King, “who took on every single burden for women and minorities” so that young women like Serena and Venus Williams could soar; First Lady Michelle Obama, for her grace, intelligence, and the promise she inspires in young women.

Star Jones shared some very wise advice the legendary Eartha Kitt gave her during a particularly bad time. Imitating the inimitable Kitt’s trademark drawl, she said, “Dahling, when they throw manure on you, use it as fertilizer and continue to grow.”
