Whitney Houston's Family Furious Over Planned Biopic
Whitney Houston’s family is irate over Angela Bassett's proposed television biopic of the late singer's life, and her tumultous relationship with Bobby Brown. The telepic was scheduled to go in front of cameras this year and air next year on Lifetime.
“Whitney is certainly worthy of more than a television movie,” says Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and former manager. “If Whitney were here today, this would not be happening.”
According to TMZ, the Houston family is considering a lawsuit to stop the move from happening. “The family has already expressed displeasure to Lifetime and made it clear they weren’t on board with a TV movie,” a source claims. “The estate is planning its own movie for the big screen — à la the This is It Michael Jackson flick.”
Lifetime announced last week that the biopic will premiere sometime in 2015 and will have Bassett, who formed a friendship with Houston when they co-starred in Waiting to Exhale, at the helm. The press release stated the film will chronicle “the headline-making relationship between the iconic singer, actress, producer and model, and singer-songwriter Bobby Brown — from the time they first met at the very height of their celebrity, to their courtship and tumultuous marriage.”
“I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments,” Bassett says of the project. “I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story.”
“Their humanity and bond fascinates us all,” she adds. “I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world.”
Surely the objections by Houston's family have rattled Bassett, who would be making her directorial debut with the film, so we won't be holding our breath for this biopic.
