A Texas mother, who had only recently begun carrying a gun for self-defense, shot a man who attempted to take her car with her two children in the backseat.

On Wednesday night, Michelle Booker-Hicks was at a Dallas gas station when she went inside to pay for her fuel. While she was inside, she saw a man get into her car, reported FOX 4

Booker-Hicks immediately thought of her 2 and 4-year-old sons in the back seat when she ran back to the car and jumped inside. She quickly grabbed a gun from her glove box and shot the man in the face to get him to leave.

“I proceeded to jump in my backseat and told the gentleman to stop, to get out the car. He would not get out of the car. He turned around and looked at me,” she told FOX 4. “I reached over the armrest to get my glove compartment and that’s when I fired at him once I got the gun from my glove compartment.”

The carjacker ran the car off the road and crashed into a fence. Luckily, her children were not injured. The man was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Ricky Wright. He was shot in the face just under his right eye, causing him to crash and later collapse in the middle of the street.

Although Booker-Hicks said she only meant to fire a warning shot, she now wishes she would have gone even further to protect her children.

“I’m not a killer or anything, but I do believe in defending what’s mine,” she said. “I hope that woke him up.”

Wright was charged with two counts of unlawful restraint and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

According to police, there are no charges for Booker-Hicks.

“When children are involved, obviously the authorities are going to be very understanding of that,” Attorney Toby Shook told FOX 4. “The law says that if a reasonable person in her situation would have acted the same way, found it immediately necessary to protect herself or a third party, in this case her children, then that's legitimate self-defense.”

There are also no charges against Booker-Hicks for leaving her children in the car.

Booker-Hicks told reporters she only recently got the gun to defend herself but had no idea she would be using it so soon. While she doesn’t have a license to carry, Texas state law allows people to carry guns inside their car even without a license.
