Sudan Reports Israel to the U.N. Over Airstrike
After a mysterious airstrike blew up a munitions factory in Sudan Tuesday, Sudanese officials are pointing the finger at Israel, and they have taken their suspicions all the way to the United Nations in an effort to shame Israel for its alleged action.
Although Israel refuses to flatly confirm or deny responsibility for the attack, Israeli officials have been issuing strong statements against Sudan, calling the nation a "terrorist state."
"The regime is supported by Iran, and it serves as a route for the transfer, via Egyptian territory, of Iranian weapons to Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists," said Amos Gilad, a senior official at the defense ministry, reported the New York Times.
However, Sudanese accounts of the bombing say that Israel is the clear culprit.
"The people have seen it with their eyes — four planes coming from the east, and we have no enemy other than Israel," Sudan’s culture and information minister Ahmed Bilal Osman said according to Al Jazeera. "The type of rockets which we have now — and some of them did not explode — we have the codes, we have seen the planes directly, this is recorded."
Following the discovery, Sudan took its case to the U.N. Security Council where Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman, Sudanese ambassador to the U.N., urged members to condemn Israel.
"We reject such aggression and expect your esteemed council to condemn this attack because it is a blatant violation of the concept of peace and security and the U.N. charter,” Osman told the U.N.
Sudan has rejected Israeli claims that it supplies terrorist organizations like Hamas with weapons and has vowed retaliatory action.
"They think that this factory supplies our army…they have accused us, [saying] that these arms would find their way to Hamas. These are allegations which are not correct,” Osman told Al Jazeera.
