Annie , Selma and Viola Davis Receive Golden Globe Nominations

Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black also scores big.

Nominations for the 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards were unveiled on Thursday, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.-inspired film Selma, the Quvenzhané Wallis-led Annie and the Netflix hit Orange Is the New Black score big in major categories.

The nominees in 25 cetegories were read by Paula Patton, Peter Krause, Jeremy Piven and Kate Beckinsale at the event. Selma received four nominations in the categories for Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Original Song in Motion Picture ("Glory" by John Legend and Common), Best Director (Ava Duvernay) and Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama (David Oyelowo).

The Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black received three nominations, one recognizing the show as a whole and two highlighting its actors. In addition to its nod for Best Television Comedy Series, the show received nominations in the categories for Best Actress in a Television Comedy Series and Best Performance by Supporting Actress in TV for the performances of Taylor Schilling and Uzo Aduba, respectively.

The holiday-themed musical Annie rounded out the top scorers, receiving two nods for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Film (Quvenzhané Wallis) and Best Original Song in Motion Picture ("Opportunity").

Other notable nominees include Don Cheadle for Best Actor in a Television Comedy Seires (House of Lies), Reese Witherspoon in Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama (Wild) and Viola Davis for Best Actress in a Television Drama Seires (How to Get Away With Murder). Though Kerry Washington was nominated in the same category last year for Scandal, the older sister to HTGAWM, she was unfortunately snubbed this year despite the series' strong fall return.

The 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards will air on January 11 on NBC.
