We admire Solange Knowles for a ton of reasons—but not for the one you are thinking of…it’s her brows.

Yes, Solo has been rocking thicker, more natural looking brows like a champ since her “Solo Star” days. She was onto something before it was "something." P.S. For the record, we haven’t forgotten about her fantastic ‘fro either!

For those of us who went a bit overboard in the grooming department (bye-bye pencil brows!) we caught up with Solange’s go-to makeup artist, Dana Delaney, to learn a few of her coveted brow trade secrets. 

“I always like to brush the brows up and over to the temples before I do any filling,” explains Dana. “Brushing them first allows you to see more clearly where you need to focus any filling.

“Next, I prefer to use a fine pencil to fill in any spots. Solange has amazing brows, so we like to do minimal filling so they don't look overly done. Once I fill, I brush the brow again to blend any harsh lines—and then I use a clear brow gel to keep everything in place.”

Dana relies on a mix of Chantecaille and MAC brow pencils, Smith brushes brow brush and Anastasia Beverly Hills clear brow gel. 

“I'm really looking forward to natural beauty becoming ‘trendy’ [there’s] nothing better than embracing your features and loving what you already have,” shares Dana. “I think Solange is already ahead of that trend.” 

But marching to the beat of her own drum hasn’t always been easy for Solange, who was targeted by online bullies about her signature look early last year. Dana weighs in for other young women who might be facing unwarranted criticism. 

“The most important person for you to impress in the world is yourself. Who takes time out of their day to make others feel bad about themselves? At the end of the day you have to look at these people that say rude things behind a computer screen as horribly unhappy.

“I'd rather be happy with ‘unkempt’ brows than wasting precious time in my life bashing what others do. You can't spend your life trying to make others happy or agree with you. You will never make everyone happy so might as well focus on making yourself happy in spite of it all.”

Surprisingly, Dana admits to never waxing or threading her clients' brows. “My mom taught me how to tweeze very early on, since our family is prone to uni-brows. It allows you to be more precise and particular.”

She admits that it can be tempting to go overboard, so best go slowly. “Now I tend to try not to change the natural shape so much, but just clean up some stragglers that ran away from home.”

The newest trend on the brow scene is hands-down microblading. For those unfamiliar with the process, it’s a temporary tattoo technique that involves using a small-bladed hand tool to deposit pigment under your skin. The results last for months, but will cost you $900+ for one session.

“I have a friend that did it and it looks really great on her,” shares Dana. “She doesn't have much brow to begin with, so it gives her confidence. If you are going to do it, just make sure you've done your research and make sure you've looked at the person’s work!”

We might stick to the pencils for now!
