Steubenville Football Players to Be Classified As Sex Offenders
An Ohio judge held a hearing Friday to classify Trent Mays, 17, and Ma'Lik Richmond, 16, as sex offenders. In March, the two teens were convicted of raping a girl last year after a party in a case that drew international attention.
The hearing is a possible first step in the teens being moved from their current state juvenile detention center to the Lighthouse Youth Center-Paint Creek in Chillicoth, Ohio, a facility that works specifically with juvenile sex offenders.
Judge Thomas Lipps sentenced Richmond to at least one year for rape. Mays, who took a picture of the naked girl, was sentenced to at least two years earlier this year.
Associated Press reports:
The options before Lipps include the least restrictive classification, requiring annual reporting for 10 years, to the most restrictive: every 90 days for life.
Unlike adult sex offenders, however, the teens' names won't be included on publicly accessible websites. And the teens can request to have the sex offender classification removed later based on their history of rehabilitation.
