Kathy Griffin on Zendaya Hair Comment: 'I Wouldn't Have Said the Joke'
Now that the hype has died down regarding Fashion Police's Giuliana Rancic's offensive comments about Zendaya's hair, the show's lead host, comedian Kathy Griffin is speaking out.
Speaking with the Chicago Sun Times' Splash magazine, Griffin said that she would not have made the insensitive joke that Rancic made. She continued that, although she does not think that it would not have been as big of an issue had she delivered the joke, she "wouldn't have said the joke in the first place."
Griffin went on to say that though her approach to comedy is often inappropriate at times, she never reads jokes unless she writes them herself. Such was the case for Rancic, who read the distasteful line, which was written for her in advance.
"Some dude wrote it for her," Griffin said. "Don't have anyone write you jokes or even suggest jokes for you on Fashion Police. [Rancic has] enough great insider gossip from actually being on the red carpet. That's what fans want to hear the next day. Just talk and be yourself."
While many sources are reporting that Kelly Osbourne chose to leave the show due to the nature of the comments, Griffin said she doesn't know if that is true or not: "Sometimes she seemed very upset at the merely seven tapings of Fashion Police we did together," she said of her former co-host. "I can tell you this: I adore that family... I can tell you there was genuine love there."
Rancic has since apologized to Zendaya.
