Soul Train Awards ‘20: 7 Artists We Want To See In This Year’s Soul Cypher
The Soul Train Music Awards are coming soon, and with comes the anticipation of who will be featured in this year’s soul cypher. In recent years, artists like Queen Naija, Luke James, and BJ The Chicago Kid have showcased the extent of their vocal abilities in the event. This year there’s no telling who could take the stage. But we have a few ideas — and wishes — on who we would like to see.
Here are seven artists that we would love to see perform in this year’s soul cypher:
Ty Dolla $ign
Fresh off the release of his third studio album Featuring Ty Dolla $ign, Ty Dolla $ign has, quite simply, never been harder. His raspy voice is in-demand from rappers and pop stars alike, all eager to add a sense of gruff silkiness to their music. Getting him in the Soul Train Awards for the cypher would be awesome — if he were to perform an original freestyle, it would be even better.
Summer Walker
Arguably one of the hottest new R&B singers in the industry, Summer Walker’s takeover has been fun to watch over the last two years. She even won Best New Artist at last year’s ceremony. Wouldn’t it be great for her grand return to the Soul Train Music Awards to be in a cypher as its anchoring act?
SZA
Songs like “The Weekend” and “Love Galore” showcase the absolute booming nature of SZA’s buttery smooth voice. They make her perfect for the cyphter’s vocal exhibition done by the act’s best singers, all determined to prove that they are the best in the line-up.

H.E.R.
H.E.R. is a surefire pick for being an amazing participant of the Soul Train Music Awards cypher. She won the trophy for Best R&B/Soul Female Artist at last year’s ceremony so it’s only right that she kicks the door in with her triumphant return via a powerhouse cypher performance.
Baby Rose
Baby Rose has the most unique voice in modern R&B, bar none. The way that she stretches her idiosyncratic timbre to notes unknown raises the hair on your shoulders over wax, so imagine what it would sound like when placed next to other artists in a live setting. She’d stick out, regardless of what she performs.
Chloe X Halle
R&B’s most exciting new duo would make for unique additions to the Soul Train Music Awards’ cypher because it typically focuses on solo artists performing a verse at each time. But what if they were to double their voices to sing as one, exposing the differences in their harmonies as beautifully as possible? It’s exciting to think about the possibilities.

Lil Baby
Ok, this is a reach. But Lil Baby’s vocal range can be heard on “Close Friends,” one of his hit singles from 2019 that explored the actions that lead up to a breakup when you’re at fault. He’s not Luther Vandross or Stevie Wonder of course, but his ability to create catchy melodies is second to none. And when has the cypher ever had a rapper grace its soulful presence? This would be the surprise of a lifetime.
