Beverly Hills Cop and Fame Get TV Show Reboots

Eddie Murphy returns to television and Fame hits the small screen for the third time.

Two of the most popular movie hits of the '80s are back in a big way on television.

After two film sequels, Beverly Hills Cop is headed for the small screen. Vulture is reporting that Eddie Murphy is producing the project and will have an onscreen role in the new version.
Sources say the spinoff, which is being developed by The Shield creator Shawn Ryan, is an hour-long buddy cop show with strong comedic elements. Murphy had very specific ideas for the premise of the TV incarnation of his popular film franchise when he spoke to Rolling Stone last year.  He said it would be a series, “starring Axel Foley's son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit.” Murphy also added, “I'd do the pilot, show up here and there.”

All that’s left now is to cue up the “Axel F” theme and “Neutron Dance.”

The original 1980 motion picture Fame enjoyed a trifecta of remakes, which included a successful, long-running TV series, a reality competition show and 2009’s big screen remake, and Hollywood isn’t done with the franchise yet.

According to Deadline, MGM Television has partnered with executive producer Nigel Lythgoe (American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance) for a new scripted series version of Fame.

The producers promise this reincarnated Fame will be a re-imagining of the original film and television series that will “strive to embody their spirit.” But the series will be updated because it's set in the backdrop of today’s access to the celebrity world. Like its predecessors, it will show the heartache, struggle and pain that its characters endure in their quest for stardom. No word yet if characters Leroy Johnson or Coco Hernandez will be included in the reboot.

The last time Fame was on television, it was a reality show nearly 10 years ago in which Debbie Allen played mentor and judge to real-life performing hopefuls.
