EXCLUSIVE: La La Anthony Collabs On Streetwear Collection With Foot Locker Marketed Towards Thicc Women
While we’re all watching La La Anthony kill it on screen in Power for its finale season, in real-time she’s killing the fashion game with her very own collection of streetwear at Foot Locker. The line is made up of versatile pieces that can be worn with a fresh pair of kicks or gussied up with the right accessories as La La intended because she’s a girl’s girl and wants to encourage women to express their individuality through their fashion choices. In keeping with that message, she hit up the Foot Locker Community Store in Harlem, New York for All Women Welcome, a panel of esteemed style influencers moderated by Netflix star Dascha Polanco to talk about style tips, self-confidence and self-expression
“We need to make sure we’re including all sizes, all shapes, all models—that’s what the real world is. The real world is not a bunch of size 0 skinny bitches walking around,” she flat-out said, before adding “We love them too!”
Being a NYC native, La La was in her element while preaching to the folks why wearing sneakers with a gown is okay, why basically wearing sneakers with anything in New York is okay, and on her go-to outfit with a fresh pair of kicks: a flannel, hoop earrings and shades.
BET caught up with La La while she walked the floor after the panel with fans shopping her debut Foot Locker collection:
BET: You’re obviously a stylish woman getting invites to some of fashion’s most prestigious events like the MET Gala and NYFW, and probably gets asked to do many collabs. So why choose to launch a collection with Foot Locker?
La La Anthony: I mean Foot Locker is a store that I've been shopping at my whole life and more importantly to be here in Washington Heights was just what I wanted to do. And I wanted to be a part of today with the woman's panel just inspiring and empowering each other. It's been like a great day all about uplifting women and I wanted to do that around where I grew up at [in New York]. And people are really going crazy for the clothes. I'm excited. I know some stuff is already sold out and I'm like, “What the hell!” [laughs]
B: Everyone is obsessed with you on Power. Are there any similarities between your personal style evolution and LaKeisha’s style evolution on the show?
LA: LaKeisha’s style evolution has been major cause she started from having no money to now being with Tommy and having money and the Gucci Sunglasses and everything. That was a moment when she stepped out of the car. So she's definitely had an amazing evolution, because she has more money now. Maybe it's the same for me.
I didn't have money, and now I have some money. So maybe my evolution is the same, but I think no matter where you're at in life, no matter what you wear, it's all about just your confidence in how you wear it. I mean, you can look at somebody and be like, “how did she pull that off?” It's all about your confidence in how you wear it, it has nothing to do with money status or anything like that.
B: What was your first memorable big fashion purchase that you made once you “made it”?
LA: I remember when Ludacris and I were on the radio together and he started his label Disturbing The Peace. We bought these Disturbing The Peace pendants and I was putting money on it like every week to pay it off. And when I finally got it, that was such an accomplishment because it was my first pendant and it’s Disturbing The Peace. I had been paying on it for a while, so that was like a really big for me.
B: So what is your favorite piece from your line with Foot Locker?
LA: So I love this (she’s holding the La La Anthony Romper Short, $72 USD). This is my favorite piece, but I like it the most in red. I just love that it can be worn in the summer, fall or spring. You can pair it with sneakers, boots or thigh highs, or throw jean jacket over it. There's so many things you could do with it.
B: You mentioned being a “sneaker girl” during the panel. What is your favorite pair that you own?
LA: I love Jordans. I mean Jordans have been a part of my life forever. You know, Kiyan love Jordans. That's our thing. I love all the Off-White collabs with Nike that Virgil [Abloh] does. I love Yeezys obviously, you know, with Kim [Kardashian] being one of my best friends so I’m definitely supporting that. I have so many sneakers. It's a little insane, but I'm a sneakerhead.
B: During the panel you also talked about your experience being a curvy woman and not being able to get clothes loaned from designers because you’re not sample size, but who are the designers or brands that were catering to your needs from the beginning?
LA: Look, I loved Pyer Moss. I love Kerby [Jean-Raymond]. He's super inclusive of all women and all sizes. So I definitely want to shout him out. He dressed me for the Met Ball. That's definitely a higher end designer that you know, stands out. I love Virgil and Off-White. I love Heron Preston as well. Those are some of my go to brands.
