Fousheé On Her New Album ‘Pointy Heights’ and Family Legacy

In an interview with BET, Fousheé discusses how a family trip to Jamaica reshaped her new album and previews her first solo tour.

Fousheé, born Brittany Fousheé, gained recognition in 2020 when Sleepy Hallow sampled her vocals from the song “Deep End” in his breakthrough hit. Since then, she has forged her own path in the music industry by blending various genres, including folk, punk, and rap. Refusing to be restricted by traditional musical categories, her sound stands out as her own.

Her latest album, Pointy Heights, is deeply personal. A trip to Jamaica inspired it, her family’s homeland, which she hadn’t visited since she was a kid. Named after a land her grandfather purchased with the dream of building a family community, the album represents a shift from the energetic, R&B-punk style of her debut, softCORE. With this Pointy Heights, she delves into indie reggae rhythms and incorporates melodies influenced by her roots, further demonstrating her abilities as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer.

“This album is a reflection of me facing inward and just like reaffirming my roots,” the New Jersey-born singer shares. “Family is the central theme around the album. As a child of a Jamaican mom and an African American dad, I think a lot of people can relate to just being of the diaspora and to calling cards and barrels.”

Fousheé admits that naming the album after her grandfather’s land wasn’t initially part of the plan. She was already working on new material when a visit to the country completely shifted her creative focus. The experience was so powerful that she scrapped her songs and started over. She didn’t feel the need to record on-site in Jamaica because the essence of the trip stayed with her. Instead, she returned to the U.S. and captured it all in the studio, using the memories and emotions she’d gathered. “I went there for a family reunion. But it just was way beyond what I thought. Like, it's all of the family there. There are 9 kids, and all the houses are back to back. The immunity and that example of the family tree being traced back right in front of me. Like, it's so close-knit, and it's not something that I experienced in the U.S.,” she explains to BET. “And then I realized when I got there, my responsibility to reflect that and pass on or take the torch and be able to pass it down to the next generation and absorb all that information, absorbing all of our history. It was just too beautiful not to talk about.”

Her lyrical talent has made her a sought-after collaborator, having worked with artists like Lil Wayne, Donald Glover, Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert, James Blake, Steve Lacy, Vince Staples, and Teezo Touchdown, just to name a few. However, this project stands out as it includes no guest features. “I wanted it to be about me and the music,” she says. “In the past, I've done so many features, so I wanted this to be my self-expression and for people to either hate or love it. I didn't want anything to distract from that because it was such an important story to tell.”

Though she’s worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, Fousheé still has dream collaborators. “I’d love to work with Lenny Kravitz and Solange,” the 28-year-old says. “A lot of my influences are no longer here. Prince and Bob Marley are two people I would have loved to work with in this era.”

Fousheé earned three Grammy nominations last year for her songwriting on Lacy’s hit single “Bad Habit” and spent the following months opening for him on his global tour. Now, she’s gearing up for her first-ever solo tour, the "Pointy Heights Tour," with pre-sale tickets available as of Wednesday (Oct. 9). The tour kicks off November 19 in Dallas, Texas, and is set to end on December 2 in Los Angeles, with stops in major cities like New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, and more. “I've only opened for people,” she says. “I think it's necessary. Although I've released all this music, I don't think people really know me, and I would love the opportunity to get to know people.”
