Defense Lawyer: Aaron Hernandez Witnessed Odin Lloyd's Murder
Closing arguments in the Aaron Hernandez murder trial began Tuesday and they didn't come without shocking moments.
Before the defense wrapped up their closing statements, Hernandez's lawyer suggested that the former NFL star witnessed the murder of Odin Lloyd, but didn't commit the crime himself back on June 17, 2013.
"He was a 23-year-old kid who witnessed something, a shocking killing, committed by someone he knew," Hernandez's lawyer, James Sultan, said of the ex-New England Patriots tight end, as reported by TMZ Sports.
In doing so Sultan seemed to place the blame on Hernandez's co-defendants Ernest Wallace and Carlos Ortiz, and even pointed to their alleged PCP use in his closing statement.
“Did one of them murder Odin Lloyd without Aaron having anything to do with it...the result of a sudden violent outburst by someone under the influence of PCP?” Sultan asked jurors, according to the Boston Globe.
"This is a terrible case. It’s about the death, the tragic death, the violent murder of a young man, Odin Lloyd,’’ Sultan added. “And it’s about another young man, an innocent man charged with’’ killing Lloyd. Don’t compound that tragedy. Don’t compound the tragedy by convicting an innocent man. Don’t make a mistake."
Sultan wasn't done yet: "If there was any evidence or any reason that Aaron had to murder Odin Lloyd, don’t you think you would have heard about it in nine weeks? But you didn’t hear it, because it doesn’t exist...You will have to conclude that Aaron Hernandez is not guilty of murdering Odin Lloyd."
Meanwhile, prosecutors maintained that Hernandez murdered Lloyd because he knew too much about his personal life.
Hernandez was heard whispering "I love you" to his fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, in court Tuesday. Jenkins's sister was dating Lloyd at the time of his death. After this trial, Hernandez still must face a separate double murder charge of two Boston-area men.
