At Least 23 Arrests Made in Ferguson Monday Night
A protester arrested Monday night in Ferguson, Missouri, was thought by many on social media to be a 12-year-old girl, but was actually an 18-year-old woman.
The St. Louis County Police Department confirmed her age Tuesday morning on Twitter. She was one of 23 arrested Monday night during demonstrations along West Florissant Avenue.
The photo of the unidentified woman went viral as many tweeted about resistance in the city where Michael Brown's death stirred outrage against police violence nationally a year ago.
There were no reports of violence or injuries in the suburb during the peaceful protests, according to police reports. Police did not use tear gas. The St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger declared a state of emergency over the city earlier Monday.
Many responded critically to the decision using the hashtag #WhichEmergency, started by Hands Up United, an organization that launched following the uprising in Ferguson in 2014.
