Jahessye Shockley, a 5-year-old girl from Glendale, Arizona, has been missing for three weeks as of Tuesday, despite a police investigation and public appeals for information.

Now, as the investigation into Jahessye’s whereabouts goes into overtime, the Glendale Police Department says they have assigned a homicide detective as the lead investigator, promising that the case would be dealt with by their “most tenured and experienced case agent.”

Jahessye was reported missing on Oct. 11 after police believe she wandered from her apartment while her mother was out, running an errand. There are no suspects and no leads in the three-week-old case and police have confirmed that Jahessye’s mother, Jerice Hunter, is not a suspect.

Despite pledges from the Glendale Police to do everything in their power to find Jahessye, her grandmother has stated publicly her belief that local police and media aren’t giving Jahessye their full attention because she’s Black.

In the midst of the search, Jahessye’s mother has come under increased scrutiny after details surfaced about another child of hers being taking into state custody last month shortly after she gave birth and questions surrounding Jahessye’s one-week absence from school the week before she disappeared.

According to Hunter, Jahessye missed school because of ringworm. Though she is not a suspect, investigators say that Hunter will undergo a polygraph test administered by the FBI or the Glendale Police at a date yet to be determined.
