Watch: J.R. Smith Breaks Down in Tears About His Dad After Winning the NBA Title
Over the course of his 12 years in the league, J.R. Smith has built up a reputation of being the NBA's loose cannon with teams just never knowing what to expect from the wild shooting guard.
But after the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors in Game 7 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night in Oakland, Smith broke down in tears at the podium, crediting his parents — and especially his dad — for getting him through "a lot of dark spots in my life."
"My dad is easily one of my biggest inspirations to play this game and to hear people talk bad about me, it hurts me because I know it hurts him and it's not who I am," a teary-eyed J.R. told reporters with his father looking on. "I know he raised me better and I know I want to do better. Everything I do is for my parents and for my family."
What a touching Father's Day moment. Watch it in full here.
Whoa! That was moving and we totally didn't see that coming from J.R. Smith.
But don't worry... his touching speech about his parents didn't stop him from turning up to the highest power to celebrate the Cavs' championship at a Las Vegas nightclub.
Somebody check on J.R. and see if he plans on partying until the Cavs' championship parade Wednesday at The Land.
In the meantime, thanks for that heartfelt speech last night. After his daughter stole our hearts during an interview last week and now this speech, J.R. has delivered two quality moments over the course of these Finals.
