Fort Worth, Texas Approves $3.5M Settlement For Atatiana Jefferson’s Nephew
Fort Worth City Council members voted to propose a $3.5 million settlement for Zion Carr, who witnessed a police officer fatally shoot his aunt, Atatiana Jefferson, at her home in 2019, CBS News Texas reports.
A judge must approve the settlement offer. Once approved, the city would deposit a lump sum in a trust for his immediate needs, living expenses, and a college savings plan.
“I believe this settlement is the right thing to do, and I hope this can bring a degree of reconciliation and healing for Atatiana Jefferson's loved ones,” Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker said, according to CBS Texas.
Zion, then 8, was playing video games with his aunt on Oct. 12, 2019, at 2:25 a.m., when she pulled a gun from her purse after hearing a suspicious noise in the backyard.
Former Fort Worth officer Aaron Dean, who is White, was one of two officers responding to a nonemergency call from a neighbor about Jefferson’s open front door.
Dean testified at his manslaughter trial that he was standing outside a bedroom window when he saw a figure pointing a gun at him. He yelled an order to drop the gun and fired a single shot through the window, killing the Black woman.
At the trial, Zion told the jury that doors were opened in the house because he and his aunt had accidentally burned hamburgers earlier that evening. He didn’t see her raise her gun toward the window before Dean fired. Zion then saw her fall to the ground and start crying.
“I was thinking, ‘Is it a dream?’” he testified. “She was crying and just shaking.”
A Tarrant County jury found Dean guilty of manslaughter after more than 13 hours of deliberation. He was sentenced to 11 years and 10 months in prison.
S. Lee Merritt, an attorney for Jefferson’s family, told CNN in 2020 that Zion has post-traumatic stress disorder.
