The Story of How Tupac and Madonna Became a Thing

As told by Rosie Perez.

Tupac’s breakup letter to his former love interest and pop songstress Madonna that recently surfaced answered much fan curiosity on what led to their 1995 split that, previously, seemed to come out of nowhere.

The only question left now is how their fling ever came to be in the first place, which famed Emmy Award-winning actress and close friend of both musicians Rosie Perez has now answered for us as well.

Stopping by for a few talk show visits on both The Wendy Williams Show and The View, the Hollywood Jill-of-all-trades took a stroll down memory lane landing her circa 1993 at the Soul Train Awards. Perez had been stood up by her date to the show just 15 minutes before, she said. Thankfully, the West Coast rap star suggested she show up on his arm — as friends, of course — after a phone call where she explained her dilemma. Plus, she hilariously added, he wanted her to put in a good word for him with Madonna.

When she and Pac arrived at the awards show hand in hand, Perez recalled on The View, she received bevies of greetings from green-eyed women who had never even spoken to her before. With Pac’s glowing hip-hop status and charming way with the ladies, it’s no wonder that the then 27-year-old found herself on jealousy's bad side.

“There were two girls — who will remain nameless — who actually wanted to beat me up,” she revealed.

As most of us probably would, Perez nudged Pac to tell the ladies that they weren’t sleeping together and were just friends, to which he lightly replied, “You can take ‘em.” Thankfully, Madonna came to the rescue thereafter.

“Madonna comes over, she looks at me, she goes, ‘Girl.’ I go, ‘I gotcha,’” Perez recounted. “I said, ‘She wants to meet you, and he goes, ‘Hook that up.’ And I hooked it up and I was very happy about it.”

And the rest was history — for a couple years, that is.

Watch Perez’s recollection of the spark that kindled Pac and Madonna’s love affair below.
