Jonathan Majors’ Lawyer Decries ‘Witch Hunt’ as Actor Makes Virtual Appearance in Court
This week, legal representation for actor Jonathan Majors claimed there was a “witch hunt” against the Creed III star following his Tuesday, May 9 appearance in a lower Manhattan courtroom via Zoom. The actor could face jail time after being hit with assault charges stemming from a March domestic dispute.
The latest update comes after the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, who brought forth the charges, unveiled more evidence regarding the alleged attack on March 2, revising the charges. The 33-year-old stands accused of striking the female victim in the face, ultimately causing lacerations behind her ear. The woman, who has remained unidentified, also claimed that she sustained injuries to her arm and hand after being pushed into the side of a vehicle.
However, in a statement following the hearing, the actor’s attorney, Priya Chaudhry, blasted prosecutors and accused them of having racial bias in the case. The attorney reiterated previous claims that an abundance of “irrefutable evidence” was given to prove “that the woman is lying, including video proof showing nothing happened, especially not where she claimed.”
Chaudhry declared, “This is a witch hunt against Jonathan Majors, driven by baseless claims. To be clear, there are no new charges against Mr. Majors.” The lawyer also claimed–without going into details–there was more evidence that would help exonerate her client but the team is “hesitant to share it, for fear the DA will tip the woman off to change her story again.”
Majors is facing third-degree assault charges, described as a class A misdemeanor, with a maximum possible sentence of up to one year in jail or a three-year probation term. He is currently court-ordered to stay away from the victim after the judge approved a a full temporary order of protection.
The next court hearing is scheduled for June 13.
