Denzel Washington-Led ‘Othello’ Becomes Top-Grossing Broadway Play of All Time

The play earned $2.8 million across eight performances before its official opening.

The Broadway play Othello, starring Denzel Washington, made a historic box office achievement this week.

The Shakespearian production, currently held at the Great White Way’s Barrymore Theatre, has reportedly been named the top-grossing Broadway play of all time. In earning $2.8 million across eight preview performances ahead of its Sunday, March 23 premiere, “Othello” has broken the $2.7 million record previously set by “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” for the week ending December 31, 2023.

According to Deadline, “Othello” initially generated $2,637,158 in its first seven performances for the week concluding on March 2. While the week’s highest ticket price was $361.90, roughly double the price for other popular Broadway shows, the average was $338.09 last week.

On Sunday, Washington and “Othello” co-star Jake Gyllenhaal appeared on “60 Minutes,” where they discussed the stage play. While speaking to correspondent Bill Whitaker, the two-time Academy Award winner separated himself from the standard “Hollywood actor.”

“I’m a stage actor who does film; it’s not the other way around,” Washington said in the video below. “I did stage first. I learned how to act on stage, not on film.”

“Movies are a filmmaker’s medium. You shoot it, and then you’re gone and they cut together and add music and do all of that,” he continued. “Theater is an actor’s medium. The curtain goes up, and you’re on. Nobody can help you.”

Directed by Kenny Leon and produced by Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker, “Othello” will have a limited run until Sunday, June 8.
