Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" Breaks Radio Airplay Record
Robin Thicke’s "Blurred Lines" is dominating radio airwaves this summer having broken the record for the highest number of radio listeners ever recorded.
Thicke's single, produced by Pharrell and featuring T.I., has reached a total audience of 242.65 million listeners, easily surpassing the previous record of 188.8 million, reports Thicke’s label, Interscope.
The summer hit has been coasting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for an unprecedented (for Thicke) seven consecutive weeks (Thicke's first single atop the music charts), and has also reached No. 1 in 80 countries around the world. Not to mention it's also broken the record for biggest single week downloads this year, receiving 428,000 downloads in June; and is already certified triple platinum.
This popularity hasn't been achieved without controversy, however. There was backlash from feminist groups who found the risqué music video — that featured three topless models — to be objectifying women. Since then, the censored version of the video, directed by Diane Martel, has more than 104 million views on YouTube.
Pharrells' Star Trak/Interscope Records will release Thicke’s upcoming sixth album, also titled Blurred Lines, tomorrow, July 30.
