Anna Wintour Shades Kimye While Defending Vogue Cover
Last April, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian shook up the fashion world with a Vogue magazine spread in which they were dubbed the "world's most talked about couple." Now, the style bible's editor-in-chief appears to be lobbing back-handed compliments at her cover stars.
On the heels of Kardashian's decidedly un-Vogue-ish nude spread with Paper magazine, Anna Wintour discussed the controversial Kimye cover with former CNN journalist Alina Cho in a conversation series at the Metropolitan Museum of New York on Monday. In her comments, Wintour seemed to imply that Kim and Kanye aren't regarded as "tasteful" by the fashion elite.
"The first celebrity that I put on the cover of Vogue was Madonna, and that was considered completely controversial at that time, too," Fashionista.com reports Wintour as saying.
"Now she's part of the establishment. I think if we just remain deeply tasteful and just put deeply tasteful people on the cover, it would be a rather boring magazine! Nobody would talk about us." Adding, even with the magazine's image, "It's very important that people do talk about us."
The editor even seemed to subtly shade Kardashian's younger half-sister Kendall Jenner's recent appointment as face of Estee Lauder cosmetics.
"What a fantastic decision that was! They have a wonderful brand that's very traditional American, and they decided they want to shake it up and reach a different audience," Wintour said. "Now and again one has to do things like that. I think it's partly of the excitement of being a journalist. I hope another Kim Kardashian comes along this year!"
If Wintour's goal is to keep people talking, she's certainly succeeding with her shady comments!
