Naomi Campbell Expresses Support for LGBT Models
Naomi Campbell has been very vocal about the importance of diversifying the fashion runways, but her mission isn't solely focused on models of color. The supermodel took to the stage during the GLAAD Media Awards this past weekend to share her love for the LGBT community and express why they're so essential to the fashion market.
"I truly wouldn't be standing here without the help of designers, makeup artists, hair dressers, manicurists. They've all made me who I truly am, and of course the efforts of the conclusion [sic] of LGBT people of color."
She went on to give a shout-out to transgender models who are killing the game right now — specifically Lea T and Carmen Carrera, and called for more acceptance of trans models in the industry.
"And along with GLAAD, I encourage even more diversity in the fashion world — that includes welcoming trans models to the runways. Much love to Lea T and also to Carmen Carrera — and I know Carmen is in the house tonight. She's in the fashion magazines W, Italian Vogue. Also just to note the recent Barney's campaign [including trans models]," Campbell said.
"The truth is LGBT culture and fashion go hand in hand. They flourish in light of making bold and brave statements."
