Michelle Obama to Visit Chicago to Address Youth Violence
Michelle Obama is set to head to Chicago on April 10 to discuss the youth violence plaguing the city. The first lady will meet with business and community leaders for a luncheon at the Hilton Chicago to discuss ways to increase opportunities for youth empowerment. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Allstate Corporation President Thomas J. Wilson and Loop Capital CEO James Reynolds Jr. will be among those present.
Obama, who attended the funeral of teen Hadiya Pendleton in January, is undoubtedly troubled over the fate of the children in her hometown. Not only did Chicago Public Schools recently announce the closing of 54 schools in the city, but a 6-month-old baby was shot point-blank due to gang violence.
"The greatest thing we can do as a city is give our children the support they need to build a successful life," Emanuel said. "We are honored to have the first lady's support in this effort. I will work tirelessly to provide safe alternatives that reduce the risk of our kids getting involved with drugs, gangs and violence."
