Lauryn Hill Moving Out of New Jersey Mansion
Lauryn Hill has decided to leave her New Jersey mansion following an ongoing legal battle with her landlords, TMZ reports. In April, an eviction lawsuit was filed against the singer for allegedly skipping out on her rent and refusing to pay up.
The suit came in the thick of a tax battle that resulted in a three-month prison sentence, which she will begin next month.
Hill denied wrongdoing but has since reached a settlement with the landlords, agreeing to cover $7,000 in outstanding debt and vacate by the end of May. No word on whether or not the mother of six has actually left the property just yet.
In addition to her pending sentence, the 37-year-old is the primary caregiver for her children, who will be partly taken care of by ex Rohan Marley, father to five of the six.
Tax and rent issues are the latest in a growing list of battles for Ms. Hill, whose music isn't exactly getting rave reviews either. It's been years since the New Jersey native dropped a new release, but the tax drama led to a record deal, and the track "Neurotic Society." The song did little to get a positive rise out fans, but drummed up controversy instead. Responding to accusations of anti-gay lyrics ("We live in a joke time…commerce and girl men…quickly scam and drag queens), Hill went online to address the confusion in a long winded Tumblr post writing, "I am not targeting any particular group of people, but rather targeting everyone in our society who hides behind neurotic behavior, rather than deal with it."
She further states that although artists are "constantly" under "media and public scrutiny," the Grammy winner now recognizes her power. "Those of us with the charge of putting out faithful vibrations, have a responsibility to report what we see, and to write about what we know."
