Akron Taxpayers to Fund $4.8 Million Settlement for Jayland Walker’s Family in Police Shooting

Walker was shot 46 times by Akron police on June 27, 2022

Akron taxpayers will bear the cost of a $4.85 million settlement awarded to the family of Jayland Walker following his police-involved shooting death, Akron Beacon Journal reported.

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik confirmed during a press conference on Monday (Oct. 21) that the settlement will not be covered by an insurance agency, as the city is uninsured. Instead, the payment will be disbursed over four years in a series of installments.

"I imagine that this is something that would have strong feelings, across the board," Malik said. "This was something that was done to protect the city's financial interests and to settle the claim."

The lawsuit, initially filed by Walker's family, sought $1 million for each bullet that struck him. Walker, a 25-year-old Black man, was killed by Akron police on June 27, 2022, after fleeing from officers during a traffic stop for a burnt-out taillight. While in his vehicle, Walker reportedly fired a gunshot out of his window, though he was unarmed when he exited the car and fled on foot. The eight officers involved fired a total of 94 rounds at Walker. Autopsy results indicated that Walker was struck by 46 bullets.

As part of the settlement, the city will prioritize the "ongoing dialogue and engagement between city leaders and the community, including the Walker family, to examine policies and procedures."
