Deon Cole: A Look at Five Career Highlights
Deon Cole has been working to get his name out there for a long time, and it’s starting to pay off. The award-winning actor and comedian is the star of Average Joe on BET+, and it’s his first time as the lead in a series. However, before this, he had some standout performances that, while they may have been supporting characters, still stole the show. Cole’s comedy specials cemented his place in Hollywood as one to watch. In Average Joe, he plays a dramatic role that shows off more of his range, but he’s honest about the fact that it wasn’t easy.
“It was extremely difficult because I’ve never been a lead,” Cole told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m used to just coming in, doing my part, jumping in my car and taking off, and going to do stand-up. That was my routine with everything I’ve ever done. They wouldn’t let me get in my car on this show. They were like, ‘No, you sit your ass down.’”
That’s an understatement, as Average Joe is a unique show and a different role for Deon. But it has been a wild ride with great rewards. Let’s look at five highlights from his TV/film career thus far.
Barbershop
He first came to our attention in the Barbershop franchise as a customer, but he was always involved in colorful commentary and appeared in all three movies.
Black'ish
On Black'ish, Cole was Dre’s zany co-worker, Charlie. Charlie was eccentric but always plugged in and made sense when it mattered.
Netflix Specials
Charleen’s Boy and Cole Hearted gave audiences a glimpse of what Cole could do on his own. He didn’t disappoint.
