Houston Woman Is Reportedly Denied A Pedicure Because Of Her Weight
When you head to a nail salon, you expect to be pampered and sent on your way with freshly painted confidence. Instead, this Houston woman left without a pedicure along with a harsh lesson in weight discrimination.
According to ABC13, Tina Lewis was left in shock when she was turned away from Rose Nail Salon in Houston because of her physical appearance.
On Thursday (Sept. 5), Lewis headed to the nail salon with hopes of getting a fresh new pedicure only to be denied service from a worker who reportedly told her that she was “too big” to sit in the pedicure chair.
Captured on security cameras, Lewis and her mom can be seen speaking with employees before leaving the salon.
“She was like, ‘What did she just say?’... I said, ‘Yes, mama, she just said that to me,’” Lewis said. "I was like, 'Can I get a pedicure? And what chair do I sit in?' And (the employee) was like, the chairs were not big enough for me to sit in. And I was like, 'Are you serious?'"
Marie Bui, an employee of the salon, spoke to ABC13 saying she actually did not intend to hurt or offend anyone.
"I said, 'I'm sorry, I cannot serve you because my spa chair is very small,'" Bui said before claiming a past customer damaged a chair presumingly due to her size.
According to the owner of Rose Nails, Lewis was denied services because if their salon chairs are overloaded, it allegedly costs hundreds of dollars to repair, and they can’t afford to replace them.
If this is indeed true, Lewis feels like the nail shop should have put up a sign to alert customers of the chairs having a weight restriction.
Understandably frustrated, Lewis doesn’t plan to return to the salon. Honestly, we can't blame her after the embarrassing encounter.
Sadly, this isn’t the first time a plus-size woman complained about receiving a less-than-stellar experience at a nail salon.
Just last year, PEOPLE reported that a woman was denied service at a South Carolina nail salon because she weighed more than 250 pounds. And in 2017, WREG reported that a sign was posted in a Memphis salon stating, “Sorry but if you are overweight, pedicures will be $45 due to service fees for pedicurists.”
