Kerry Washington to Be Honored at GLAAD Media Awards
Kerry Washington's efforts in promoting equality have been recognized by GLAAD, formerly known as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The organization is set to honor the Scandal star with the Vanguard Award during the GLAAD Media Awards ceremony.
The coveted award, which is given to media professionals who have made significant efforts in promoting equality, is considered one of the highest honors of the night. Washington has actively used her celebrity to help promote inclusion and peace of LGBTQ-identifying individuals.
In addition to her role as Olivia Pope in the LGBTQ-inclusive Shonda Rhimes drama, she has publicly participated in GLAAD's annual anti-bullying campaign and Spirit Day, has spoken out against the stifling of LGBTQ people in Russia and Africa, and has lent her voice in support of marriage equality for same-sex couples.
GLAAD's president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis further justified Washington's qualifications for the honor in a statement: "Throughout her illustrious career, Kerry Washington has consistently brought life to characters that encourage acceptance of LGBT people," she said. "Her outspoken support for equality, both here at home and abroad, has sent messages of hope and empowerment to fans all over the world, fostering dialogue that builds understanding and helps move hearts and minds."
Previous recipients of the GLAAD Vanguard Award include Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Theron, Elizabeth Taylor, Sharon Stone and Janet Jackson.
Kerry Washington will be presented with her award at the Los Angeles awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton on March 21.
