Funkmaster Flex Goes In on Dame Dash
It's Funkmaster Flex vs. Dame Dash in rap's latest verbal sparring session. Neither are rappers, but the two are at odds over the politics of the music game, and on Thursday (June 5) Flex used his Hot 97 radio show as a forum to address the Dash issue.
Their beef started because Dash called former Def Jam president Joie Manda a "culture vulture." Flex, who is friends with Manda, defended the exec. Dash responded by going at the Hot 97 DJ via Instagram.
All the back-and-forth officially hit the airwaves on Flex's radio show. The two had a talk at some point, which Flex didn't want to publicize out of "respect" for Dash, so he did the next best thing. He spent almost 25 minutes ranting about Dash's good and bad business tactics. "This guy right here was instrumental in the music business," he said. "When Bad Boy was in this town scorching hot …this guy Dame Dash understood how to bring his brand through and make his brand matter."
The brand, Roc-A-Fella Records, hit a crossroads in 2004 when Dash and Jay Z notoriously fell out, without ever really patching up their relationship. During his tirade, Flex shared tidbits about the breakup of The Roc and called Dash a hypocrite for essentially profiting right alongside the people he criticizes. "[Jay Z's] 'Ain’t No' with Foxy Brown woulda died out here if Def Jam didn't pick it up," noted Flex. "There was a movie soundtrack, Nutty Professor, that picked up that single. Remember when the culture vulture cut you that check?!"
Without Def Jam's help, Roc-A-Fella would have been "Boo Boo Records," Flex said.
Dash got another verbal beating for not evolving with the music industry, as Flex has said he has done. The 45-year-old suggested that Hov's ex-business partner "stick to artwork, clothing and slippers" and stay out of the business of music all together.
The Poppington gallery owner had his say once more during an interview on The Combat Jack Show Thursday. Earlier in the day on Instagram, Dash "politely" asked that Flex join him on the show.
