Exclusive: Queen Latifah Honors Teen at HALO Awards
No good deed should go unrewarded, at least as far as Nick Cannon and Queen Latifah are concerned. The celebs have teamed up to give shine to teenagers who are doing good in their communities with the TeenNick HALO Awards ("Helping and Leading Others").
Cannon conceived, executive produced and hosts this year's awards, the fifth annual, while Latifah honors a teen named Denzel Thompson of Philadelphia. The 19-year-old is a co-founder of Philadelphia Urban Creators (PUC), a youth-led organization that grows organic food and revitalizes blighted landscapes into models of urban sustainability from the ground up, after having battled obesity and self-esteem issues as a kid.
Like Thompson, each of the four honored teens is presented with a check from an A-list celebrity to further their goals. Chris Paul, Shay Mitchell and Josh Hutcherson also participate this year.
“Denzel’s the one changing the world right now," says Latifah about her honoree. "It’s in his hands and his generation’s hands. I’m really proud of him because when the world gets to see people like him, it shows that his generation is not just about texting all the time or doing a crazy dance. They have gifts and abilities, and they’re connecting people in a way that no other generation will ever be able to do.”
The show will broadcast live for the first time ever from the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, November 17, at 8pm EST — tape delayed for West Coast — on Nick at Nite.
