Orioles Cancel Baseball Game Due to Baltimore Riots
After postponing Monday night's game against the Chicago White Sox, the Baltimore Orioles are canceling Tuesday night's scheduled home game against the White Sox as well.
With the city on a curfew during this state of emergency due to ongoing protests, riots and looting over the Freddie Gray death, baseball can wait. This is bigger than sports.
"After consultation with MLB & state & local officials, tonight’s game between the Orioles & the White Sox at Oriole Park has been postponed," the Orioles tweeted Tuesday.
The postponed games from Monday and Tuesday will be made up as part of a double-header against the White Sox on May 28th. Wednesday's game against the White Sox will begin at 2:05p.m. at Camden Yards, but will be closed to the public. The Orioles will play their three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida from May 1-3.
This comes after fans were asked to stay inside Camden Yards during the ninth inning of the Orioles-Boston Red Sox game Saturday due to raging protests outside of the stadium.
On Monday night, NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony, who grew up in Baltimore, penned a heartfelt message to his hometown on Instagram.
"We all want Justice. And our city will get the answers we are looking for, Melo wrote. "My deepest sympathy goes out to the GRAY Family. To see my city in a State of Emergency is just shocking. We need to protect our city, not destroy it."
Gray, 25, died on April 19 after suffering a severe spinal-cord injury while in police custody.
